Located in historic downtown Excelsior.

The Historic DeGroodt House is located in downtown Excelsior, Minnesota. It is a designated historic site within the Downtown Historic District, conveniently located ½ block off Water Street and three blocks from Lake Minnetonka and the Commons park.

The House was built in 1899 by Ansel P. Lyman, who died in a train accident the same year. After marrying Ansel's widow Amy, The House then became the long-time home of Reuben DeGroodt, a local political and civic leader and pioneering merchant. The DeGroodt family has a long history in Excelsior, beginning with their arrival via oxcart in 1875.

Oscar DeGroodt ran a hardware and furniture store on Water Street for several decades, which is now the site of Excelsior Hotel. Oscar's son Reuben took over the business and was active in Excelsior serving as Village trustee, on the Oak Hill Cemetery Association, and the Commons Park Beautiful Committee. The House was converted to a duplex in the 1940s and became a commercial property in 1989.

Since 2016, it has been used for intimate special events such as catered wine dinners. Just as the family was intertwined with the community of Excelsior, so is the DeGroodt House and the memories that will be made there.
